Day 2Kathmandu city sightseeing

The daylight reveals the city in many different contrasts; wake up to explore the true identity of Kathmandu. Watch in amusement as scores of people pass by you, stop and observe their faces which hold a smile even to people unknown. The sights, smell and sounds of the city offer an amazing example of jovial concord, the tinkle of the temple bells to the blaring horns, and the ancient dwellings to towering buildings or the mix of incense in the fresh morning air.

As you walk down to the “Durbar Square”, look up at the temples and see, the intricately carved details of gods and goddesses come alive. Take a peek at the “Kumari” ghar (ghar: residence). The Kumari, the living Goddess of purity herself, resides inside the walls. The “Jhonchhe” Tole (Tole: locality) used to be frequented by the hippie generation in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Enlighten yourself how a nation came to be in the National Museum nearby. Amazingly around 50 temples can be seen in the vicinity. Also, the Nepalese handicraft stalls line the lanes, so pick something up for your loved ones back home.

The mischievous primates that line the 365 stone steps up the hillock to the “Swyambhunath” Stupa can grab your snacks, if you decide to eat on your way up. The amazing view of the city below will take your breath away.

A little distance away, throngs of Hindu devotees can be seen queued up at the Pashupati Temple, the holy men or “Babaji’s” of the temple will bless you. The temple signifies the once stronghold of Hinduism, which still rules the beliefs of more than 75% of the Nepalese population.

Further away at the gates of the “Boudhanath” Stupa, you will not notice its enormity until you step inside. The gigantic stupa is one of the biggest in the world; the colorful fluttering prayer flags atop the whitewashed background will be a sight to behold. Inhabited mostly by Tibetan settlers, the stupa is an accolade to the deep-rooted Buddhist beliefs of a nation, where Buddha himself was born. All the above mentioned places are listed in the UNESCO, as heritage sites. Take a break in the evening, the bars at Thamel area serve till midnight and the music is live. Overnight in Kathmandu.
