Day 3Flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, trekking to Phakding

Altitude: 2800m/ 9186ft | Flight: 40 mins | Trek 3-4 hrs
Spot the mighty Himalayas, the 40 min flight takes you above the clouds on your way to Lukla. The Tenzing Hillary airport comes into view, as you cut across the clouds to the landing strip below. Lukla, the gateway to the majestic Himalayas, offers a walk of a lifetime. A few technical insights and arrangements later, you will start your first step towards the mountains, our first stop will be Phakding village. The trek is light and will help you acclimatize gradually, the joy of seeing the small village come into view beside the “Dudh Koshi” river is simply beyond imagination. Rest a while and fuel up for the trek ahead. Take a hike to the Rimjung Monastery nearby if you want, and seek blessings for safety for the trip ahead. The Yeti Mountain Home luxury lodge in Phakding is located on a tranquil spot near the Dudh Koshi River, so take a hot shower to ward off the weariness. Overnight in Phakding.

Day 4Phakding to Namche Bazaar

Altitude: 3,440m/11,280ft | Trek 6 – 7 hrs
Altitude: 3,440m/11,280ft | Trek 6 – 7 hrs
Grab a hearty breakfast to take on the trail from Phakding to Namche Bazaar, you will need it. However, the trail will definitely make you feel elated, and the mighty peaks will accompany you all along the way. Cross the Dudh Koshi River four times over high suspension bridges and you might even catch a glimpse of the Everest Peak. However, the clouds hold secrets most of the time. Namche Bazaar (Bazaar: small market/town) comes into view in all its glory, it is also referred to as the “Sherpa” capital as most of the inhabitants are mountaineers, and listen to their stories of conquests over the peaks by the fireplace in the evening and you will be impressed. Refuel with authentic and delicious Nepalese “Dal-Bhaat” (lentil soup and rice) at the Yeti Mountain Home Lodge during dinner time. Overnight in Namche Bazaar.

Day 5Acclimatization in Namche Bazaar. Trek to Kumjung Monastery and back 5-6 hrs trek

It’s time to acclimatize to the high elevation; Namche Bazaar precisely serves this purpose. So take the day and stroll around the town. The Sherpa capital has lot to offer as it is the trading point for traders from Tibet, as trading is a custom that has been the lifeblood of these regions for generations. You can gain more insights on the Sherpa culture and their lifestyle as the bazaar is bustling with activities. The town also offers access to Internet, check your e-mails and update your status on social media, but before you head on further, visit the Tourist Visitor Center close to the headquarters of the Sagarmatha National Park, while Namche market itself is certainly worth wandering around and is a good place to get some souvenir shots. Don’t miss the chance to check out the world’s only Yak (Mountain Ox) “parking area” above the market, careful though as the Yaks are notoriously ill-tempered.
If you are in for some more adventure while in Namche, hike up to Kumjung Gompa (Monastery) to watch the scalp that purportedly comes from a yeti. While at the gompa, ask the monks (lamas) for directions for getting to Guru Rinpoche’s (Head Monk’s) cave. Back in Namche Bazaar, beat the evening chill at Yeti Mountain Home Luxury Lodge with some local brews and chat with the Sherpas, their stories will enchant you. Overnight in Namche.

Day 06Namche Bazaar to Dingboche (3820m/12532ft): 6-7 hrs trek

The trek starts with a steep climb up Namche Bazaar. Then the trail eases out and you will see the Tibetan scripts that are carved out on the rock faces along the way which are hard to decipher, but most probably they wish you well for the journey ahead. The wooden bridges that let you cross the rivulets are rickety; they creak along with the sound of the splashing of the water below. Take in the fresh scent of juniper, pine and copper beech trees as you walk along, and feel relieved at the last sharp descent that lets you into Deboche. A small settlement consisting of several hotels and a Buddhist nunnery. The eastern side of Deboche is bordered by the slopes and foothills of Kangtega (6783m), and the opposite side by unnamed slopes (4500-500m) extending northwards to Taboche Peak (6495m). One cannot miss the view of the Imja Khola separating the two Himalayan massifs. The source of this river is the Imja Lake located at as high as 5010m at the base of Island Peak also known as Imja Tse.

Day 07Sightseeing of Tengboche Monastery (3,870m/12696ft) descending to Monjo (2835m/9301ft): 7-8 hrs trek

Wake up to a brand new day and grab some breakfast. The view of sunlight shimmering on the jutting rocks on the mountain is breathtaking. The 15-20 minutes walk from your lodge takes you to Tengboche Monastery (or Thyangboche Monastery). Pay your respects to the biggest Monastery in the Khumbu region and take part in the ceremonies; however, the monks in the monastery are camera shy, so keep it down. Tengboche is the first place on your trek that you have a clear view of Mount Everest, so ask the locals to point it out for you. Spectacular views of Ama Dablam, Thamserku and Kongde Ri are definitely a treat.
The descent to Monjo valley is rather dramatic, with lovely balcony path between the pine trees. The Kongde Ri comes into view as you descend. Monjo is made up of a handful of lodges alongside the path a few minutes walk from the entrance to the Sagarmartha National Park. There is a small monastery just off the path here, after you arrive at the Yeti Mountain Home, you can take a hot shower to ward off your weariness, and the serene location of the lodge will ease you down. Overnight in Monjo.

Day 08Monjo to Lukla: 5-6 hrs trek

The Lodge offers a scrumptious breakfast. Also, the final trek from Monjo to Lukla is relatively easier to undertake, so slow your pace and stop for drinks and lunch along the way. The trail is greener, compared to the barren landscapes of higher elevations. The beautiful gorges and cliff faces will definitely ignite your passion for nature photography. The walk across the suspension bridge laced with colorful prayer flags atop the Dudh Koshi River will make you want to turn back and tread right back to the mountains, the warmer air down at this level will ease your runny noses and sore throats. The distant snowy peaks bid you farewell and a safe journey homeward and the prayer flags and stone shrines wish you good luck. Lukla welcomes you with the assurance that civilization is not far away.
Stretch those sore legs on one of the comfortable couches at the Yeti Mountain Home and share with fellow trekkers about the experience you had beside a bonfire. A warm dinner and some brew in the evening will definitely enliven your already high spirits. Retire to one of the comfortable beds in the lodge. Overnight in Lukla.

Day 09Flight to Kathmandu

Pack your bags; it’s time to fly above the clouds back to civilization. Let go of your anxiety as the plane leaves the runway. If the day is clear, you can view most of the peaks from the window of the plane (Please also note that the flights to and from Lukla is subject to weather conditions, delays and cancellations are commonplace). Take the time in Kathmandu to shop around for trinkets and memorabilia for your loved ones or head to “Thamel” the tourist hub in Kathmandu with the friends you have made along the way. The atmosphere there is lively and there’s a party going on somewhere in Thamel. Overnight in Kathmandu
